About this website

Welcome to Patio Gardening! The website where you learn small scale ways to grow some of your own food, and create a little green space for yourself.

TODAY IS THE FIRST STEP

Hopefully this is your first step to a long and rewarding journey of discovery. As life gets more and more hectic, it seems evermore a priority to carve out a space for ourselves where we can slow down for a bit, and just enjoy some of the little things. Sometimes a nice little green space of your own is just the ticket.

I have always had a love of gardening and having the capability to grow my own food. Along with that, there seems to be a sense of accomplishment and serenity from being in a space that I created to provide for my needs, whether they are hunger or relaxation. I created this site both as a path for more sustainability in our world, and as an outlet to let your own creativity flow.

Come with me now on a journey where you start to carve your own small space to welcome your soul, and feed you body and mind!

TIMES ARE CHANGING

Let’s face it, times are tough right now. Health care costs are on the rise. The climate is all over the place, and have you even tried to buy a roll of toilet paper lately? Going along with that is the fact that we are more and more dependent on a supply chain that is also utilized by 382 million other people. It doesn’t seem like it takes much anymore for it to get stretched to the limit.

Your health should be your first priority. With more and more pressure on our food producing systems, we are having to rely on more and more industrial methods to get us the quantity we need. Unfortunately, with increase in quantity comes decrease in quality. Increasingly foods are grown on more depleted soils, which lack a lot of the nutrients that the plants (and you) need to be healthy. Foods now have to be picked early after being treated with chemicals to eliminate pests, trucked hundreds or even thousands of miles, put in cold storage, and subjected to more industrial processes to make them ripen. Think about how good an apple tastes coming from your own tree vs that common red apple in the store. How about those first ears of your own sweet corn? And homegrown tomatoes vs. store bought? Forget about it! That isn’t even fair!

There is also a lot to be said for having your own small space for reflection and enjoyment. Sometimes it’s nice to just walk out on your patio or balcony in the morning or evening and just enjoy a nice cup of something. Sometimes a bit of reflection does wonders to heal the soul.

THE GOAL OF THIS SITE
